El Retablo de las Maravillas Summary by Alex Fuentes Chanfalla and Chirinos are two con artists that have come to town to put on a show. Since they have no puppets, the performance consists of the evocation by the swindlers of a succession of wondrous appearances. He warns the people, however, that in order to see the wonders one must have been born within the bonds of marriage not be a bastard and be an Old Christian which means that one must have no trace of Jewish or Muslim blood in his ancestry.
After being paid six ducados, Chanfalla begins the show by pretending to evoke Samson in the act of demolishing the temple. Doubtful at first, the villagers stare at each other, waiting to see if anyone reacts to Samson who, of course, is not really there. Not wanting to look like an infidel, the Mayor rises and pleads with Samson to spare his life.
The villagers, ashamed at seeing nothing and fearful of betraying themselves to be New Christians, also pretend to see Samson. Before long, however, the villagers delude themselves into believing that they actually do see the wonders. As they dance, a quartermaster appears and informs the villagers that there is a legion of soldiers approaching. He orders them to prepare lodging for them and departs. Fearful for his life, however, Chanfalla tries to explain that the soldier is not part of the show and that they should make haste to prepare the lodging before he returns.
What Jewish woman are you talking about, what dance, and what Tontonelo?
