How do we make sure we not just have change for change sake but are actually transforming? How do we know when is the right time to initiate a transformation?
This concept will be critical for our companies and in turn the U. As I look back at , I can say I have been involved in efforts that aim to guarantee the U. I was also able to participate in the U. The report, amid concerns the U. Every intention from the members and the team that staffed it was that it would make a difference in policy and legislation.
I believe we must focus on three significant opportunities to ensure a sustainable and secure future in the U. Second, we need to focus on growing specific sectors of our economy. In many cases this requires that we examine the intersection of research and commercialization.
Third, the federal government needs to look at some of the existing federal funding silos and consider a comprehensive plan to streamline federal programs. One thing that I have come to realize is that good policy and legislation gets done more often when there are champions to continue to push and shape that effort.
This effort is an opportunity to have an organized, national effort that can build a strong constituency for innovation and technology and what the appropriate federal role is to create an environment for the U. But it is not enough. There is a still a huge opportunity for a national effort that links regions that are leveraging innovation and entrepreneurial efforts to grow jobs. We have defined 10 strategic priorities to accomplish just that, and we will deliver a cohesive set of recommendations and planned next steps by the end of the month.
The success of these efforts will depend on our ability to understand where we are on the Sigmoid Curve and to determine the ideal point of transformation. I would like to explore this concept in future posts. It is one of the paradoxes of success that the things and the ways which got you where you are, are seldom those that keep you there.
