If you have a band that you regularly play with, use them on the recording. You may not have the technical equipment to do that level of recording, but get it to sound as good as you can.
At this point, do not rent time at a local studio. No need to spend that kind of money yet. The great thing is that making high quality sound recordings is much easier and less expensive now than it was even just ten years ago. The quality of your microphone will be the biggest factor in the quality of your recording.
So if you can, borrow a good microphone. There should be no need to go back and do overdubs unless they are really necessary for the song to work. The point here is to get the song into a shape and format that allows you to hear it the same way an audience will hear it.
