But these are stories from another time written in the mid twentieth century and they are certainly not "politically correct" for our times.
Traven was a German immigrant to Mexico who fell in with the cultural and literary scene like Rivera, Kahlo and Siqueiros. A good example is "La Tigresa" The The back of this book advertises that you will find "real Mexican" stories inside. One day, not long after their wedding, he asks Luisa for a cup of coffe? Juvencio then asks the caged parakeet to get him a coffee. She is repulsed but only takes action after he threatens the cat and the horse.
I guess this is his way of "revenge" or to "break her". The humour is there but as I caution, definitely incorrect. These are stories of natives and colourful locals who come up with their own creative solutions to each of the ten stories in the book. There is the case of the doctor who finds a poor native person sitting outside his house asking for help to find his wife. The language from the native is very colourful and enjoyable and reesults with a most odd outcome.
Some are blindsides or hoodwink stories and from my perspective, may actually paint "real Mexico" as not one expects. However, if you keep in mind the entertainment factor and the period that they were written, you might actually crack a smile or smirk after each story. Read in Spanish.
