Bitti began training as an artist as a teenager in Rome, where he learned the Italian Mannerist style that he would later disseminate in Peru.

On their way to Peru, the members of the expedition spent 14 months in Spain, where Bitti would have had the opportunity to observe developments in Spanish painting.
